If you are crafty by nature, crocheting may be a hobby you have acquired. But have you ever thought about giving back to society through crafts?

Newborns In Need

Newborns In Need is the name of a not for profit organization that has many local chapters. Sometimes a baby is born to parents not equipped to care for a newborn. This organization will step in with a gift of items like a blanket, onesie, nightgown, wash cloth and toy. Some chapters have people that crochet and knit the items. Others will sew items. But before you start, visit with the chapter. Most of the time special thread will be provided to cut down on allergies and harshness to the baby’s skin.

Since this organization also serves premies, the items must also fit certain size specifications. I have even crafted bereavement outfits for those unfortunate premature babies that are still born. And they always appreciate donations of material and time.

The Homeless

Homeless shelters are always in need of blankets. We all have leftover thread from completed projects. What better use for them than to craft blankets or shawls for the homeless. Homeless people might even appreciate a hat to protect them from the cold. Mittens and socks are other possibilities. Be creative and help a person stay warm that is temporarily down on their luck.

Battered Women Shelters

There are battered women shelters in almost every community. Most of the shelters would gladly accept your hand made blanket donations. And it sends a personal message to a lady who may need and item someone made especially for her. And wash cloths and other items would be just as welcome.

But where you may really can make a difference is the children. Those leftover scraps are usually the perfect size for stuffed bear clothes. If you are talented enough, make an outfit for a stuffed bear or other animal. A small bear blanket is easy to do. And the child will have something of their very own to love and keep them company during this trying time.

Another big hit with young ladies is to crochet a tiny blanket sized just for them. I try to make it in their favorite color. And I put their name in the blanket using the filet crochet concept with regular thread. Squares with one letter each is an easy way to start forming the name. Then just join them like you would granny squares.

As you can see, your crafty contribution to the community is only limited by your imagination.

Regardless of where you begin, you can make a difference in someone's life, one needle and piece of yarn at a time.
